Professor John suggests that the government should consider reintroducing the goods and services tax (GST), citing its efficiency as a consumption tax that broadens the tax base. Even with a six per cent GST rate applied to 50 per cent of consumption (excluding essential items), it could generate approximately RM45 billion annually, significantly reducing the budget deficit.
