Bioinformatics is an exciting and challenging multidisciplinary field that combines mathematical, statistical, computer science and information technology methods to solve problems in biology. In the recent years, rapid technological advances have produced tremendous amount of biological data. This has led to an increased demand for bioinformatics graduates who are skilled in applying computational algorithms and tools to make meaningful sense of the biological data. The Bachelor of Science (Hons) Bioinformatics aims to produce quality graduates with relevant skills and hands-on experience to meet the increasing demands in the bioinformatics job sector.

The Programme Educational Objectives (PEOs) are:

  • The programme aims to produce graduates who have a comprehensive understanding of bioinformatics
  • The programme aims to produce graduates who are competent in various practical, numerical and digital skills related to bioinformatics
  • The programme aims to produce graduates who are able to demonstrate entrepreneurship, leadership and recognize the need of lifelong learning for successful career advancement
  • The programme aims to produce graduates who are competent in communication and interpersonal skills
  • The programme aims to produce graduates who possess innovative thinking, analytical skills and problem-solving abilities to facilitate the application of bioinformatics into various aspects of bioinformatics.
  • The programme aims to produce graduates who are aware of current issues and technological advancement in bioinformatics taking into account of commercial, ethical, social and legal issues
The Programme Learning Outcomes (PLOs) are developed in such a way that on completion of the programme, graduates will be able to:

  • PLO1: Demonstrate specialized knowledge in a specific discipline in bioinformatics and life sciences.
  • PLO2: Perform independent research and adapt protocols and procedure to generate reliable data for scientific report.
  • PLO3: Analyze and assess bioinformatics information from a variety of sources to seek solutions to address challenges and concerns in bioinformatics and life sciences
  • PLO4: Communicate and demonstrate interpersonal skills
  • PLO5: Function effectively and responsibly as a group member or a leader in a group to solve problems
  • PLO6: Demonstrate professionalism and understanding of the basic ethical, legal and social issues related to bioinformatics
  • PLO7: Demonstrate lifelong learning and entrepreneurial skills
  • PLO8: Analyse and interpret data using digital and numerical skills

Minimum Entry Requirements

QUALIFICATION ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS
STPM/A-Level Pass with CGPA 2.0 (Grade C) in three (3) subjects including Biology
UEC Grade B in 5 subjects
Matriculation/Foundation in Sciences/Pre-Medical courses**(courses ≥ 1 year in the same institution) Pass in three (3) subjects including Biology (Min 50%/Grace C/CGPA 2.0)
Canadian International Matriculation Program (CIMP)/South Australian Matriculation (SAM)/Canadian Pre-Univeristy (CPU)/Monash University Foundation Year (MUFY)/New South Wales (NSW)/Higher School Certificate (HSC)/University of New South Wales (UNSW) Grade C in three (3) subjects including Biology
Diploma (Level 4, KKM) (Computer Science, IT/Health Sciences or any diploma in Science) Min Pass 50% or Grade C or CGPA ≥ 2.0
Degree (Level 6, KKM) (Computer Science, IT/Health Sciences or any diploma in Science) Min Pass 50% or Grade C or CGPA ≥ 2.0
International Baccalaureate (IB) Pass with min 24 score
