Programme Overview:
The Doctor of Philosophy (Biotechnology) is a research-mode postgraduate programme that aims to prepare graduates with advanced scientific expertise and analytical skills through in-depth, independent research in a selected branch of biotechnology. This will enable graduates to be experts in their chosen specialities.

Candidates are required to attend and pass the Research Methods, Statistics and Ethics course.
The Programme Educational Objectives (PEOs) are:
- The programme aims to produce graduates who have specialised knowledge in relevant areas of Biotechnology;
- The programme aims to produce graduates who are competent in developing protocols and procedures;
- The programme aims to produce graduates who are competent in biohazards and occupational safety;
- The programme aims to produce graduates who are competent in communication and interpersonal skills;
- The programme aims to produce graduates who have the ability to carry out independent research;
- The programme aims to produce graduates who can contribute to the understanding of current issues and technological advancement in Biotechnology taking into account relevant commercial, ethical, social and legal issues;
- The programme aims to produce graduates who are innovative, creative, and possess analytical and problem-solving abilities.
The Programme Learning Outcomes (PLOs) are developed in such a way that on completion of the programme, graduates will be able to:
- Generate knowledge and understanding through independent research;
- Contribute to a specific area in Biotechnology;
- Create and interpret knowledge towards the advancement of Biotechnology;
- Apply specialised techniques and knowledge at the frontiers of Biotechnology development;
- Demonstrate the ability to seek, adapt and provide solutions to address challenges and concerns in Biotechnology;
- Contribute towards the understanding of current issues and technological advancement in Biotechnology, taking into account relevant commercial, ethical, social and legal issues;
- Provide leadership and contribute to research and refereed publication, and
- Be involved in academic discourse with peers and experts in related disciplines
Minimum Entry Requirements

A Master’s degree (Level 7, MQF) in a related field, as accepted by the HEP Senate. OR Other qualifications equivalent to a master’s degree recognised by the Government of Malaysia OR Candidates without a related qualification in the field/s or working experience in the relevant fields must undergo appropriate prerequisite courses determined by the HEP. OR Bachelor’s degree in related area with minimum CGPA 3.7 and above (fast-track to PhD) |
Note: International students are required to achieve a minimum score 5.5 IELTS OR band 3 in MUET OR its equivalent.
