The PhD in Medical Biochemistry program emphasizes fostering independence in scientific research and critical thinking, with a focus on high-quality research and lifelong learning. It aims to elevate students’ competence in Medical Biochemistry, with specialized expertise in an area selected for their thesis.

It considers all aspects of Medical Biochemistry and integrates all learning domains of the Malaysian Qualifications Framework.

A Doctoral Degree aims to enhance further the knowledge, skills, and abilities acquired at the master’s level. It generally equips the graduate with the capability to conduct independent research.

The objective of the PhD in Medical Biochemistry program is to produce high-quality graduates who can effectively integrate knowledge and skills from the biological sciences and related technologies, while also considering ethics, communication skills, leadership, professionalism, and social responsibility.

Programme Structure

The program is entirely research-based. Components of the program are not organized by subject but are divided according to research areas/expertise: Medical Biochemistry, Bioinformatics, Genetic Engineering, Molecular Diagnostics, Molecular & Cellular Biochemistry, Structural and Computational Biochemistry, Clinical Biochemistry, Fermentation Technology, and Molecular Biology.

Successful completion of the research project and its defence are required for graduation. In addition to the thesis, there will be ongoing assessments to monitor research progress. The tools used may include proposal presentations, research progress reports, portfolios, journal club presentations, publications, and conference participation.

Continuous assessment of students is conducted through progress reports and research presentations every 3 months throughout their candidature. The final evaluation is based on the assessment of the doctoral thesis and the defence of the thesis at the end of their candidature. A panel of examiners, including two external examiners and one internal examiner, will review the thesis.


Minimum Entry Requirements

QUALIFICATION  ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS 
Doctoral Degree by Research as of Programme Standards Medical and Health Science:
  1. A master’s degree accepted by the HEP Senate; or
  2. Other qualifications equivalent to a master’s degree that are accepted by the HEP Senate.

    Note:

    1. No direct entry from bachelor’s degree level to doctoral degree level.
    2. Candidates with bachelor’s degree who are registered for master’s degree programmes may apply to convert their candidacy to the doctoral degree programmes within ONE (1) year after master’s degree registration, subject to:
      1. having shown competency and capability in conducting research at doctoral degree level
      2. rigorous internal evaluation by the HEP
      3. approval by the HEP Senate.
*Doctoral Degree by Research as of Standards for Master’s and Doctoral Degree:
  1. A master’s degree in the field or related fields accepted by the HEP Senate; or
  2. Other qualifications equivalent to a master’s degree recognised by the Government of Malaysia.
  3. Candidates without a related qualification in the field/s or working experience in the relevant fields must undergo appropriate prerequisite courses determined by the HEP.

*Applicable to all Doctoral programmes including Doctoral Degree by Retrospective or prior publication and TVET

A Bachelor’s degree with the following conditions:

  1. a bachelor’s degree in the field or related fields with first-class (CGPA of 3.67 or higher) or its equivalent from an academic or Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme;
  2. undergo internal assessment; and
  3. any other requirements of the HEP.

Bachelor’s degree candidates who are registered for master’s degree programmes may apply to convert to the doctoral degree programmes subjected to the following conditions:

  1. within 1 year for full time and within 2 years for part-time candidates;
  2. having shown competency and capability in conducting research at doctorallevel through rigorous internal evaluation by the HEP; and
  3. approval of the HEP Senate.
