Programme Overview:
The MSc Biotechnology is a research-mode postgraduate programme that aims to provide graduate students with the opportunity to enhance their knowledge through independent research in a selected branch of biotechnology. This will enable graduates to be competent in handling basic and applied research in their chosen specialities.

Research mode
Candidates are required to attend and pass the Research Methods, Statistics and Ethics course.
The Programme Educational Objectives (PEOs) are:
- The programme aims to produce graduates with advanced and in-depth knowledge and transferable skills in biotechnology.
- The programme aims to produce graduates who are able to pursue lifelong learning and adapt effectively, professionally and ethically in a challenging and continually changing bioindustry.
- The programme aims to produce graduates who are able to work independently and systematically to comprehend a project, design and conduct research as well as analyse and communicate the outcomes effectively.
- The programme aims to produce graduates who are able to demonstrate leadership qualities through effective collaboration with peers and stakeholders.
The Programme Learning Outcomes (PLOs) are developed in such a way that on completion of the programme, graduates will be able to:
- Demonstrate a basic knowledge in the field of biotechnology which includes life sciences, biostatistics, information technology, genetics, modern biotechnology, bioprocessing and bioinformatics.
- Apply the principles and techniques of biotechnology in order to identify and solve various community problems using a biotechnology-based approach.
- Plan and conduct a given research project and then analyse and interpret the data obtained.
- Demonstrate oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrate skills in the use and application of information technology tools.
- Demonstrate leadership qualities and the ability to work in a team.
- Demonstrate managerial and entrepreneurial skills.
- Demonstrate the motivation to sustain a life-long learning process through continual upgrading of skills and knowledge.
Minimum Entry Requirements

A bachelor’s degree in the field or related fields with a minimum CGPA of 2.75 or equivalent, as accepted by the HEP Senate OR A bachelor’s degree in the field or related fields or equivalent with a minimum CGPA of 2.50 and not meeting CGPA of 2.75, can be accepted subject to rigorous internal assessment OR A bachelor’s degree in the field or related fields or equivalent with minimum CGPA of 2.00 and not meeting CGPA of 2.50, can be accepted subject to a minimum of 5 years working experience in the relevant field and rigorous internal assessment. OR Candidates without a qualification in the related fields or relevant working experience must undergo appropriate prerequisite courses determined by the HEP and meet the minimum CGPA based on first and second requirement. |
Note: International students are required to achieve a minimum score of 5.5 in IELTS OR Band 3 in MUET OR its equivalent.
